An ellipsoid whose three perpendicular axes are proportional in length to the principal values of the index of refraction of light in an anisotropic medium and point in the direction of the corresponding electric vector. Also known as ellipsoid of wave normals; indicatrix; optical indicatrix; polarizability ellipsoid; reciprocal ellipsoid.
