kickback

A condition that exists when attempting to start a reciprocating engine where there is a tendency to rotate in the direction reverse to the normal direction of rotation. The condition is caused by spark plug firing when the piston is moving slowly upward during the compression stroke. The expanding gases apply pressure on the piston before it has passed over top dead center. Kickback can be prevented by ensuring that the spark occurs late.
