(cell and molecular biology)
A type of cilium containing one central pair of microfibrils and nine peripheral pairs; they extend from the apex of hair cells in all vertebrate ears except mammals.

This consists of a central kinocilium (or cnidocil) surrounded by an array of actin-rich stereovilli (Goltz and Thurm, 1991).
Each neuromast is composed of several hair cells that contain a bundle of stereocilia and a single kinocilium. These projections are embedded in a long, prominent gelatinous cupula that grows continuously (Blaxter, 1984).
