The ectodermal anlage of the lens of the eye; its formation is induced by the presence of the underlying optic vesicle.

Similarly, lens formation begins in the third week of gestation as the "lens placode" and initial development concludes in the seventh week.
In particular, regarding FGFR function, expression of the dominant negative FGFR1 in the developing mouse lens placode (using a Pax6 promoter expressing a dominant negative truncated form of FGFRl) inhibited lens cell proliferation and differentiation, thus demonstrating that FGFR activation is necessary for lens development (Faber et al., 2001).
The nasal placodes (olfactory placodes) arise from the medial aspect of the lower portion of the frontal prominence, and the lens placodes arise from the lateral aspect of the lower portion of the frontal prominence.
