Maremma

 

a zone of low-lying, formerly marsh-ridden areas on the western coast of the Italian peninsula, extending intermittently from the mouth of the Arno River to the Bay of Naples. The total area of the Maremma is approximately 5,000 sq km. Fodder grass and rice are grown in the drained areas, and live-stock is raised on pasture land.

Crossbreeding among types usually works well, for example herding breeds such as Border Collies crossed with Australian Shepherds, or guardian breeds such Pyrenees and Maremma, because the genes and instinctive behaviors won't fight with one another.

In 2006 Maremma guardian dogs were deployed on Middle Island near Warrnambool, Victoria to protect Little Penguins Eudyptula minor from Red Fox predation (Bourchier 2015).
