metaverse

The term coined for a 3D virtual world in Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash" novel, written in 1992. The metaverse term is commonly used to describe aspects of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) applications and environments.

Facebook's Metaverse
In late 2021, Facebook changed its name to Meta Platforms, Inc. for two reasons. The name better represents all the products the Facebook company created or acquired rather than just Facebook social media. In addition, CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated his intent to create an AR/VR "metaverse" environment for Facebook users, and the Meta name is more in line with that objective. The Oculus virtual reality (VR) system is a product of Meta Platforms (see Oculus, DeepFace and Facebook).

The Ultimate Metaverse
There are many techies who would like every human interaction to be virtual, and the metaverse is the ultimate manifestation of that goal. With the use of goggles, or much less intrusively, smart glasses, they imagine having all physical contact with people via their digital twins or avatars. Perhaps that reality will prevail in the future. Stay tuned! See virtual world, social VR, Second Life, Decentraland and multiverse.
