Microcytosis and possible early iron deficiency in paediatric inpatients: a retrospective audit.
[12] In CKD,
microcytosis may be attributed to ID and/or haemoglobinopathies, while macrocytosis may be attributed to folate and/or vitamin B12 deficiency.
In the setting of globin chain deficiency and imbalance, red cell hemoglobin content is decreased, resulting in
microcytosis and hypochromia.
(37,38) SEM image analyses confirm these findings and also indicate
microcytosis in the arsenic-treated groups.
Our study recorded approximately 57% anaemic patients with
microcytosis and/or hypochromasia.

microcytosis and hypochromia in the differential diagnosis of iron deficiency and [beta]-thalassaemia trait," International Journal of Laboratory Hematology, vol.
Moreover, 13.9% of men and 14.7% of women with iron deficiency anemia had evidence of
microcytosis. On the contrary, a macrocytic morphology was present in only 3.1% of subjects with vitamin [B.sub.12] deficiency.
Reduced size is termed
microcytosis. Increase in red cell diameter above normal is called macrocytosis.

microcytosis of red blood cells.
[3] Globin synthesis studies and DNA analyses were performed in donors with
microcytosis or hypochromia or both associated with normal ferritin, Hb [A.sub.2] and Hb F levels.
(9,10) Red blood cell size can easily be determined through dark field microscopy, with small cells (
microcytosis) indicative of iron deficiency and large cells (macrocytosis) of vitamin B12 or folate deficiency.
