The maximum stress per unit area that a specimen can withstand without breaking when it is bent, as calculated from the breaking load under the assumption that the specimen is elastic until rupture takes place.

Fortunately, in the 60's, researchers in North America had found that there is a strong correlation between the modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture in bending. Since then, the bending stiffness has been used for Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) of strength of structural wooden members.
