Cases of vestibular
neuronitis are typically sporadic [10], but they have been frequently observed to occur in epidemics [11].
References from No.11 to No.17 offer diagnostic criteria of common diseases with dizziness symptoms, which are vertebrobasilar TIA,11 vertebrobasilar artery infarction,11 Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo,12 Meniere's disease,13 sudden deafness,14 vestibular
neuronitis,15 Migrainous vertigo,16 anxiety and depression.17 Numeration data was expressed by percentage and frequency.
From a neuro-otologic standpoint, make a point of separating past and present problems (ie, not the vestibular
neuronitis, BPPV, etc., that the patient previously had, but the CSD they presently have).
With acute vestibular
neuronitis or labyrinthitis the patient usually wakes in the early morning with debilitating vertigo, nausea and vomiting with or without hearing loss.
Differential diagnosis of migraine includes BPVC, recurrent vestibular
neuronitis, and headache due to other causes (Gans, 2002a).
The history also distingnishes BPPV from the other major peripheral vestibular disorders: Meniere's disease, vestibular
neuronitis, and perilymphatic fistula.
Most common cause is vestibular
neuronitis, a condition where the balance mechanism in the inner ear becomes inflamed, often during or after a cold or 'flu.
Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most frequent form of vestibular dysfunction, followed by Meniere's disease and vestibular
neuronitis. Several studies show that the incidence of BPPV increases with age, and affects women more than men.
Vestibular
neuronitis was first described by Hallpike at a medical meeting in 1949; this report was subsequently published by Dix and Hallpike in 1952.
The common peripheral vestibular disorders include Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), Meniere's disease, Vestibular
Neuronitis, Acoustic neuroma, Labyrinthitis, Ototoxicity, Post trauma and Perilymph fistula.
Objective: To determine the frequency of vestibular
neuronitis in vertigo patients at a tertiary public health care facility in Karachi Pakistan.
