neutron diffractometer

[′nü‚trän ‚di‚frak′täm·əd·ər]
(physics)
A diffractometer in which a beam of neutrons is used for diffraction analysis, and the intensities of the diffracted beams at different angles are measured with an ionization chamber or radiation counter.

The neutron diffraction measurements were performed at room temperature in the 2-axis 'PSD' monochromatic neutron diffractometer ([[lambda].sub.0]=1.068 [Angstrom]; Q=0.45-9.8 [[Angstrom].sup.- 1]) [22] at the 10 MW Budapest Research Reactor, using thermal neutrons.
In situ single crystal diffraction experiments were performed at ANSTO, using Wombat high intensity neutron diffractometer [6].

Since overlapping of reflections is rarely a problem in single crystal diffraction work, the neutron diffractometers used in this type of analysis are usually designed to maximize luminosity and without paying too much attention to resolution.
In the late 1970s, macromolecular crystallography at NIST began with collaboration between NIST and NIH to establish a single-crystal neutron diffractometer. This instrument was constructed and employed to solve a number of crystal structures: bovine ribonuclease A, bovine-ribonuclease-uridine vanadate complex, and porcine insulin.
Alexander Wlodawer resulted in the development and implementation of a neutron diffractometer with a linear detector specifically designed for collecting diffraction data from crystals of biological macromolecules (1).
Continuing improvements in the speed and availability of x-ray (especially synchrotron) and neutron diffractometers, and computer hardware and software, have made multidataset refinements commonplace and have led to structural problems of increasing complexity being tackled by power diffraction.
