Noncommissioned Officer

 

(in Russian, unter-ofitser), the rank of junior commanding staff officers in the Russian Army and in certain foreign armies. The Russian Army had three ranks of noncommissioned officer: sergeant major (in the cavalry and cossack hosts, vakhmistr; in the navy, sergeant major or conductor), senior noncommissioned officer (platoon commander), and junior noncommissioned officer (in the artillery, feierverker; in the cossack hosts, uriadnik).
