ortho-toluidine

CH3C6H4NH2 A light-green, light-sensitive, combustible, toxic liquid soluble in alcohol and ether, very slightly soluble in water, boils at 200°C; used for dyes and textile printing and as a chemical intermediate.

Prilocaine is biotransformed by hepatic amidase to aminophenol metabolites (i.e., ortho-toluidine and N-propylalanine), which subsequently can oxidize hemoglobin to methemoglobin.
Currently, workplace exposure limits are set at 5 parts per million for ortho-toluidine and 2 ppm for aniline.
The DuPont Chambers Works in Deepwater, N.J., was a major producer of two carcinogens (beta-naphthylamine and benzidine) and two suspected bladder carcinogens (ortho-toluidine and 4,4'-methylenebis [2-chloroaniline]).
