Care is required during surgery to remove inflammation not only because of MRSA-induced
otorrhea but also because of mucosal edema in the middle ear or mastoid cavity and granuloma formation, and postoperative complications may occur.
Myxomas of the temporal bone may have local destructive properties causing
otorrhea, hearing loss, headache and facial palsy depending on the site of involvement (1, 3, 7).
Cases of
otorrhea were also initially managed conservatively.
Descriptive findings recorded were as follows: 1 = abnormal, 2 = amber, 3 = bulging, 4 = cloudy, 5 = dull, 6 = effusion, 7 = erythematous, 8 = normal, 9 = obstructed, 10 =
otorrhea, 11 = purulent, and 12 = retracted.
Diagnosis and management of spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid-middle ear effusion and
otorrhea. Laryngoscope 2004: 114: 800-5.
In addition, the median duration of that episode of
otorrhea was shorter, the median number of days with
otorrhea during the next 6 months was much lower, and the median number of recurrences of
otorrhea during the next 6 months was smaller with the eardrops.
TM healing was excellent at 1 month postoperatively and there was no CSF
otorrhea.
The criteria on which the diagnosis of osteomyelitis of the temporal bone was based included (1) clinical symptoms of persistent otalgia or
otorrhea; (2) failure to respond to medical therapy and local treatment; (3) uptake at the temporal bone on bone scan and gallium scan; (4) exclusion of ear tumor by histopathology if granulation tissue was present; and (5) positive findings on computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Regarding the clinical presentation, 30 (56.6%) patients presented with recurrent
otorrhea as well as decreased hearing, 12 (22.6%) had complain of recurrent
otorrhea only while 11 (20.7%) wanted myringoplasty only to improve their hearing loss.
The common presentation of CC is hearing loss, transient
otorrhea, otalgia and ear fullness [3].
Each had pussy fluid (
otorrhea) coming through at least one ear tube--an indication of middle ear infection (otitis media) and hadn't been on antibiotics for at least 2 weeks.
The investigators excluded patients who had been treated with any ear drop or analgesic within 4 hours of the exam; children with
otorrhea, ear drum rupture, or ventilation tubes; or complications of ear disease in the past 2 weeks.
