"If a pulse
oximetry test had been taken when Poppy was born, I feel she could have been treated earlier rather than getting to the stage of needing resuscitation.
The technique of pulse
oximetry is by the use of spectrophotometric emission.[13],[14] The ratio of absorbance at these wavelengths is calculated and calibrated against direct measurements of arterial SpO[sub]2.[13],[14] The waveform, which as seen on pulse oximeter help the clinician to eliminate all artefacts [Figure 1].
The mean drop in pulse
oximetry oxygen saturation reading between baseline and occluded digits was found to be 14.7%.
Patients with suspected OSA were admitted electively to a dedicated polysomnography room in a medical ward for unsupervised overnight
oximetry.
Oximetry studies performed in other wards of the hospital during hospitalisation were also included.
Prediction of cognitive dysfunction and patients' outcome following valvular heart surgery and the role of cerebral
oximetry. Eur J Cardiothorac Surg 2008;33(4):560-5.
BP was measured 15 minutes after BP measured by pulse
oximetry method.
A number of studies have been carried out worldwide, but there is lack of locally published literature about the use of pulse
oximetry as a screening tool to detect cCHD in newborns.
(8) New Jersey was the first state to implement legislation mandating newborn pulse
oximetry screening.
While pulse
oximetry does not detect all CHDs, it is both highly specific (5) and cost-effective.
The FDA's Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience (MAUDE) database includes the case of a patient who received methylene blue for localization of the parathyroid glands during parathyroidectomy and who developed a blister on the finger where the pulse
oximetry probe was placed.
