In order to ensure the functional equivalence of the cement and asphalt
pavement structures, the
pavement structure needs to be carefully designed so that the control index of the
pavement structure approaches its limit at the end of the design life cycle, ensuring that the
pavement structure has neither "excessive design" nor "insufficient design".
A traditional French
pavement structure is chosen as reference.
The elements involved are: the advancement of technology in the aircraft industry, development of airport
pavement structure design, discovery of new pavement material and development of new technology in the airport pavement maintenance system.
Rutting resistance of a paving asphalt mixture is one of the important considerations in asphalt mix design, as a large part of accumulated rutting in
pavement structure occurs in the surface layer.
Non-destructive testing of pavements using FWD is typically accompanied by predicting the Young's modulus of each layer of the
pavement structure through backcalculation or the inverse analysis of the acquired FWD deflection data.
Tack coat and seal coat materials can be applied in almost any road
pavement structure. Therefore it is very important to know something about its behaviour.
For example, alligator cracking, deep depressions, or soil stains on the surface are all signs of base or subgrade problems in the
pavement structure.
Knowing the actual state of particular
pavement structure is not only useful in determination of the best performing designs in given climate but also for optimal scheduling of repaving and maintenance of the road network.
