Intel is being a coy about offering specifics on capacity and interface, but it says that slotting Ruler SSDs into a server can get a 1U server to more than 1
petabyte of space.
Powered by Concerto OS 7, the 7700 FSP provides over 1.3
petabytes of effective capacity or serves 20,000 persistent virtual desktops across six shelves, and adds synchronous replication and stretch cluster capabilities to the menu of data protection services.
Up to 224 nodes can be configured, delivering a massive level of storage capacity of up to 56
petabytes. Moreover, nodes can be added without shutting down the system, enabling the capacity of the system to be scaled up in a flexible and timely way as processing levels increase.
The need to store critical digital content and imaging at the
petabyte level and beyond can no longer be accomplished with traditional storage solutions.
The other device IBM is working on, which it called simply the "
petabyte storage device," would be designed to store data for as long as 50 years without the need for migration to another medium, Hillsberg said.
Petabytes - which are 10-to-the-15th-power bytes, or measures of computer files, hard disk space, and memory - are used today only to measure the storage space of multiple hard drives or collections of data.
A
petabyte is not [10.sup.15] or 1,000,000,000,000,000 bytes but rather [2.sup.50] or 1,125,899,906,842,624 bytes, a difference of 12 percent.
To begin, the average size of a large data center has grown from hundreds of gigabytes to hundreds of terabytes, and some have grown to over a
petabyte. In addition, the number of applications has grown as well.
Oracle Corp announced in December 2003 that it was to test its Database 10g product against LCG, while IBM Corp announced in April 2003 that it was building a 1
petabyte data storage grid to support CERN's LHC efforts.
The volume of e-records the ERA program expects to receive from agencies between 2005 and 2010 is estimated at almost a
petabyte of data.
