[pə′trō·lē·əm ′ben‚zēn] (materials)
Colorless, volatile, flammable, toxic petroleum distillate with boiling range of 35-80°C; a special grade is ligroin (petroleum ether; boiling range 20-135°C), used as an extractive solvent, especially for drugs. Also known as benzin; benzine (archaic usage).
