The Brazilian fiber belt: Harvest and management of
Piassava palm (Attalea funifera Mart.).
Effect of drying, molding pressure, and strain rate on the flexural mechanical behavior of
piassava (Attalea funifera Mart) fiber--polyester composites.
A man in a woollen hat unloads bundles of
piassava from another boat on to a wooden cart and I follow behind him, up the town's main street.
Attalea funifera (piassava or piacava) is endemic to a belt along the Atlantic coast of Bahia in Brazil (Figure 1) where it mostly inhabits sandy and spodosolic soils on elevated terraces close to the sea.
Aphandra natalia is known under the vernacular names Chilli, Chilli-punschu, Chiri'si, Fibra, Kinchuk, Kintiuk Sili, Tindiuqui, Tintiuk, Wamowe (Ecuador) and Piassaba, Tintuki (Peru) and Piassaba, Piassava (Brazil) (Barfod, 1991; Borgtoft Pedersen & Balslev, 1990, 1992; Macia, 2004).

Perhaps more important, though, is the fact that the local people are largely engaged in limited subsistence activities, such as the ornamental fishes and
piassava (palm fiber) trade, which generate enough cash to provide for basic necessities.
