This was approximately three times the cost of developing the original
planimetric map. It was going to be very difficult to justify spending this much money on utility feature collection.
Zooming in on a specific damage reach shows the reach against the
planimetric map, and layers a topographic map over the planimetric data so the user can visually place the reach within the watershed terrain.
Larsgaard assessed overall mapping progress at the start of the 1980s to that date and found that some 1,000
planimetric maps had been published since IGY activities commenced.
It provides instant access to orthophotos,
planimetric maps, and maps of service areas, political and administrative boundaries, development areas, fire and police station locations, hospitals, schools, and libraries.
Planimetric maps are used where accurate portrayal of cultural features, without vertical information, is required and in such applications as plan and profile mapping, city base-maps for street identification and location, planning and zoning, and as a base property for mapping and GIS.
The county's GIS database was developed over three years at a cost of nearly $5 million from detailed
planimetric maps, soils maps, survey control, and orthophotography.
