pressure ionization

[′presh·ər ‚ī·ə·nə′zā·shən]
(astrophysics)
A condition found in white dwarfs and other degenerate matter in which electron orbits overlap to the point that electrons in higher quantum levels are no longer associated with any particular nucleus and must be regarded as free.
