WHAT IS POST
PUERPERAL PSYCHOSIS? This rare and severe depression is characterised by psychotic symptoms or abnormally elevated mood (hypomania).
The old conception of "
puerperal psychosis" (MacDonald, 1847) as a special entity is no longer tenable, although it is a convenient term in everyday use, so long as it is understood to refer to the setting in which the psychosis occurs and is not in itself a diagnosis.
