The main goal of the following experiment was testing of a rabbet joint according to the EN 204 (European Committee for Standardization 2001) and EN 205 (European Committee for Standardization 2003) standards.
One advantage to using rabbet joints instead of butt joints when assembling a tray like this is that the former provides about 30 percent greater joining strength because there's more surface area for the glue to adhere to when the floor and sides are glued and screwed together.
Rabbet joints offer ample surface area for the glue.
You'll need a table saw or radial arm saw, plus either a dado blade for the saw or a router to cut the rabbet joints at the corners of the chest In addition, you'll need a saber saw, electric drill, belt sander, orbital sander, two 4-ft.
The joints are simple rabbet joints, cut 1/2 of the wood thickness and assembled with glue and finishing nails.
