Either of two diseases transmitted by the bite of a rat: spirillary rat-bite fever and streptobacillary fever.

To the Editor: Rat-bite fever was once considered an infection exclusive to children living in poverty; however, dense urban housing and changing pet-keeping practices may be altering this profile (1,2).
Rat-bite fever (RBF) is a rare, systemic illness caused by infection with Streptobacillus moniliformis.
