residual volume

[rə′zij·ə·wəl ′väl·yəm]
(physiology)
Air remaining in the lungs after the most complete expiration possible; it is elevated in diffuse obstructive emphysema and during an attack of asthma. Also known as residual air.

This review has shown that some interventions such as use of a swallowing reflex method to reduce NGT misplacement, adjustment of infusion rate based on gastric residual volumes to reduce regurgitation and aspiration, and use of conventional NGT to prevent local trauma are valid options for nurses treating patients who have had an acute stroke.
Uroflowmetry measurements and post-void residual volumes are presented in Table 3.

The two groups were compared in terms of FVC, [FEV.sub.1], [FEV.sub.1]/FVC, [FEF.sub.25-75], inspiratory capacity (IC), total lung capacity (TLC), residual volume (RV), RV/TLC, thoracic gas volume at functional residual capacity (FRC-pleth), [FEV.sub.3], [FEV.sub.3]/FVC, and 1-[FEV.sub.3]/FVC.
Finally, increased dead space to tidal volume ratio (VD/VT), increased shunt, and high residual volume to total lung capacity ratio (RV/TLC) or distribution of ventilation all have a negative effect on the respiratory drive.
High residual volume and the practice recommendations of ASPEN were not addressed in the hospital policy or practice.
Trans-abdominal ultrasound was done to assess prostatic volume along with pre and post-void residual volume. Bladder filling was ensured to get co-mplete pre-void bladder volume and to get acoustic window for visualizing prostate gland.
This factor can affect detrusor hyperactivity, sphincter activity, voided volume and residual volume. [2] For example, alpha blockers are prescribed in order to support and enhance the preserved emptying function.
Uroflowmetry performed 10 days after removal of the catheter showed a maximum flow rate (Qmax) of 7 mL/s, a mean flow rate (MFR) of 5 mL/s, urine volume of 150 mL and residual volume of >100 mL.
Routine special investigations should include an HRCT scan (to estimate heterogeneity, integrity of fissures and degree of tissue destruction, and to exclude occult malignancy), full pulmonary function testing (including measurements of forced expiratory volume in 1 second, forced vital capacity, residual volume (RV), RV/total lung capacity (TLC), TLC, carbon monoxide diffusing capacity and 6MWD), arterial blood gas measurement and echocardiography (to exclude pulmonary artery pressures >50 mmHg).
This finding, the authors wrote, suggests that for women with uncomplicated SUI, a "basic office evaluation" (i.e., a positive provocative stress test, a normal postvoiding residual volume, an assessment or urethral mobility, and a negative urinalysis) is a "sufficient preoperative work-up" (N.
