(geology)
A depression in the floor of the ocean in which the water circulation is topographically restricted and therefore generally is oxygen-depleted. Also known as barred basin; silled basin.

The Michigan Formation in what is now western Michigan probably formed in a shallow, marginal-marine, restricted basin or basins (e.g., restricted embayments, lagoons, or salinas).
One possible explanation for this difference is that runoff is concentrated in the restricted basin of the Norwegian Sea rather than being mixed by the currents of the open Atlantic Ocean.
