(rok-oon ) A device for exploring the upper atmosphere of the Earth. It consists of a large balloon to which is attached a small rocket. The rocket is fired at a considerable altitude, thus avoiding the air drag of the lower atmosphere. The balloons are usually Skyhooks: large nondilatable plastic balloons that can carry a heavy load to altitudes of over 30 km.
