rotational flow

[rō′tā·shən·əl ′flō]
(fluid mechanics)
Flow of a fluid in which the curl of the fluid velocity is not zero, so that each minute particle of fluid rotates about its own axis. Also known as rotational motion.

Exact solutions for the rotational flow of generalized Maxwell fluids in a circular cylinder, Math.
The specific rotational flow rate for the screw was calculated at 6.4 kg/(h rpm).
The flow parameter has values between rotational flow where [lambda] = -1, simple shear where [lambda] = 0, and planar extensional flow where [lambda] = 1.
The time required for blending is reduced significantly by top-to-bottom flow compared with rotational flow. This angled mixer position is the most effective for mixing and blending applications and should be used in most situations that do not specifically involve drawing material from the surface.

The parameter [S.sub.f] ranges from 0 for pure rotational flow to infinite for pure elongational flow (for simple shear flow [S.sub.f] = 1).
It was thought that the rotational flow of the compressed mixture in the discharge screw was being maintained past the end of the screw.
While at low shear rates in the steady rotational flow the concentration dependence of viscosity is in agreement with the trend observed on the tube rheometry, the data at shear rates above 0.2 [s.sup.-1] do not appear to show any strong concentration effects.
