The property of an electric circuit whereby an electromotive force is produced in the circuit by a change of current in the circuit itself.
Quantitatively, the ratio of the electromotive force produced to the rate of change of current in the circuit.

An oscillator, separate from the garment so that it can be removed prior to washing, sends a low-level current from its position on the data cable through the wire array, enough to create a magnetic field to measure the array's self-inductance. The self-inductance changes proportionally to the cross sectional area of the band, producing a resonant frequency in the oscillation circuit.
The substantial high frequency performance improvement seen is due to the high capacitance density and more importantly, to the low self-inductance of the ultra-thin material.
The inductance formula provides a good estimate of a convenient value of the resonator self-inductance from which the resonator capacitance may be calculated.
