The artist shed much light on the work's thematic message, the heavy presence of colour, and signs of graphic technique imported from
sgraffito, etching and silkscreen.
As the paint or ink is removed, the wax colors you used for your pattern will glow through the lines of your
sgraffito drawing.

Many students chose to apply thick impasto layers then use a
sgraffito technique to draw into the wet paint, revealing the colors below.
"We create traditional styles from a local red Pennsylvania clay, decorating it in traditional methods that are called slipware [redware objects coated with liquid clays of contrasting colors] and
sgraffito, which means scratch decoration," explains Foltz.
The decorative media include painting, sculpturai relief, and most commonly
sgraffito, an originally Italian technique by which linear designs were scratched through layers of colored plaster.
