Since the DSA procedure is indicated mostly in patients with a short residuum, any revision that shortens the hosting bone significantly compromises the rehabilitation outcomes [12-14].
2) 75 wt% coal + 15 wt% short residuum + 10 wt% sapropel.
In order to accelerate the oxidation processes and to enhance adhesive coupling in the coal-binder system, dry lacustrine sapropel was added as a structuring agent to the short residuum. Owing to its adsorption and catalytic properties and the specific structure, sapropel sorbs a part of low-molecular-mass oils and accelerate the processes of oxidation of the residuum to the bituminous state during the subsequent thermal treatment.
Reasonable indications for DSA include a short residuum, an excessive volume of soft tissues, skin problems, and pain, which make the traditional residuum-socket attachment a hardly viable option.
What I am arguing here is that these outcomes are not satisfactory for young amputees who could benefit from direct skeletal attachment, whose life expectancy is 30 to 50 years, whose short residuum bone significantly reduces the contact area between the bone walls and the implant, and who are willing to be involved in active sports like standing amputee ice hockey (http:// www.isihf.org).
Osseointegration has reasonable indications for an amputee with a short residuum of one-third of a limb segment or shorter.
Direct skeletal attachment may be a better or even the only method for patients with a very short residuum and high soft-tissue volume.
