New pest complex in California: The polyphagous
shot hole borer, Euwallacea sp., and fusarium dieback, Fusarium euwallaceae.
Polyphagous
shot hole borers stimulate a host response in avocado that includes gumming and a white residue around holes the insect has formed.
Entomologists led by Richard Stouthamer proposed the name polyphagous
shot hole borer (PSHB) for the tiny insect, an ambrosia beetle.
"A second
shot hole was dug into the ground in a track beneath them with two projectiles under eight inches of soil."
At 15', the result will be a ragged
shot hole in the target plus one or two holes punched though by the wads.
The first is known as
shot hole and usually occurs in dry weather, so frequent watering helps.
