sinus barotrauma

sinus barotrauma

A condition associated with pain in and around the sinuses caused by an injury produced by pressure changes in the air. The incidence of this type of barotrauma is about one-third that of otitic barotrauma. See also otitic barotrauma.

In a study by Fagan et al of 50 divers who had experienced sinus barotrauma, 12 (24%) were found to have either septal deviation, polyps, or abnormal nasal secretions, and 17(34%) reported tenderness over the sinuses on palpation.
No authors of articles about paranasal sinus barotrauma have proposed surgery as an appropriate treatment.
If snorkeling, car and sinus barotrauma are of concern as rapid ascents and descents can occur during underwater tows.
