solid state hybrid drive

A hybrid drive is an SSD and hard disk that work together as one drive. Hybrids may store only the operating system in the faster solid state drive (SSD), or they may automatically migrate frequently used programs and data from the disk to the SSD.

This is essentially an interim device, because SSD storage is more costly than the very mature hard drive technology. However, as time moves on, SSDs will overtake hard drives that rely on spinning magnetic platters making thousands of rotations per minute.
