The optic strut is a bony formation located between upper side of the body and the lesser wing of
sphenoid bone. This formation separates optic canal from the medial portion of superior orbital fissure.
* Erosion of the
sphenoid bone with a mass in the sphenoid sinus.[4]
*Type III (temporal extended FLA): A Type III FLA was performed for lesions that invaded the greater wing of the
sphenoid bone, sphenoidal ridge, anterior clinoid process, cavernous sinus, and the third ventricle.
The
sphenoid bone is a midline osseous structure lying anterior to the basilar portion of the occipital bone and is protected on either side by the temporal bones.
Giant-cell tumors of the
sphenoid bone in four children: Radiological, clinical, and pathological findings.
The palatine bones attach the maxilla to the
sphenoid bone. They consist of a horizontal portion and perpendicular plates.
Classical anatomy textbooks (Testut & Latarjet, 1960; Rouviere & Delmas, 2007) describes the sphenoidal tubercle as a bone elevation located in the external surface of the greater wing of the
sphenoid bone, specifically in the anterior edge of its infratemporal crest, where it takes a lateral and inferior direction.
In one of the skulls we observed bilateral presence of two similar bony bar arising from the sides of the body of sphenoid towards the lesser wing of
sphenoid bone, thus creating one extra foramina (Fig.
In 1904, Erdheim postulated that craniopharyngiomas developed from squamous remnants of the obliterated craniopharyngeal duct, suggesting that these tumors may arise at any point along the tract of migration of Rathke's pouch from the vomer, the roof of the nasopharynx, or through the midline
sphenoid bone beneath the floor of the sella turcica.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the skull base in the long, transverse, and anteroposterior views detected a 5.4 x 4.8 x 5-cm heterogeneously enhancing mass arising from the
sphenoid bone (figure 2).
Asymmetry of the
sphenoid bone and its suitability as a reference for analyzing craniofacial asymmetry.
Also, extensive erosion and destruction of adjacent greater wing of
sphenoid bone was noted.
