squawk ident

squawk ident

A phrase used by ATC (air traffic control) to ask a pilot to activate the identification feature on the aircraft transponder. Once the feature is activated, the ground controller can immediately establish the aircraft's identify.

You are on departure, air traffic control asks you to "squawk ident," and they respond with, "not receiving your Mode C." In the P-3 community, we ask our in-flight technician to troubleshoot the problem, but his response is an unexpected "Sir, the transponder was removed before preflight!" First, you ask him to repeat what he just told you.
