Nowak, "Ten-year follow-up of a randomized clinical trial of total thyroidectomy versus Dunhill operation versus bilateral
subtotal thyroidectomy for multinodular non-toxic goiter," World Journal of Surgery, vol.
al RLN injury was 7.2% in total thyroidectomy, 1.9% in
subtotal thyroidectomy, 12.8% in throid carcinoma and 2.9% in hyperthyroid goiter.16 In our study RLN injury was 2.3% for bilateral total thyroidectomy.
In the literature, recurrence of benign multinodular goitre after
subtotal thyroidectomy varies from 2.5 to 42%, after 5 to 30 years of follow-up [5].
(9,10) Moreover, the risk of postoperative complications involving the RLN and the parathyroid glands is equivalent for both total thyroidectomy and
subtotal thyroidectomy. (11,7) Other advantages of a TT include achieving a definitive histology when a possibility of a thyroid malignancy exists and lastly, thyroid hormone replacement therapy with l-thyroxine is easily monitored using a simple blood test.
The indication for the
subtotal thyroidectomy was not reported.
[21,43,44] In our study the majority of patients were females, in whom benign conditions predominated; the operations performed were either lobectomy or
subtotal thyroidectomy.
The best way to safeguard the nerve is to either stay away from its course as in
subtotal thyroidectomy or to identify it to its fullest extent as in total thyroidectomy.
There were no statistically significant differences (p value not significant) between the group with
subtotal thyroidectomy and the group total thyroidectomy within the examined thyroid disease.
A
subtotal thyroidectomy may be performed if the goiter causes respiratory difficulties or dysphagia (LeMone et al., 2011).
Total or
subtotal thyroidectomy was done depending upon the need.
TT = total thyroidectomy; STT =
subtotal thyroidectomy; RTL = right total lobectomy; LTL = left total thyroidectomy; RST = right
subtotal thyroidectomy; Dissec = dissection; XRT=external radiation therapy; + = given;- = not given.
