Syntagm

 

in a broad sense, any sequence of linguistic elements linked by the relationship of dependent member to governing member. This is F. de Saussure’s concept of syntagm.

A syntagm may be a sequence of words (external syntagm) or a sequence of morphemes (internal syntagm). For example, dom-ik forms an internal syntagm in which the element dom- (“house”) is the dependent member and ik (diminutive suffix) the governing member. This syntagm corresponds to the external syntagm malen’kii dom, in which dom is dependent and malen’kii (“small”) is governing.

In a narrower sense, a syntagm is a phrase within a sentence; it may be predicative, attributive, or objective. In this same sense, the sentence is a chain of consecutive syntagms. L. V. Shcherba defined a syntagm as an articulated phonetic unit organized by intonation, expressing a single meaningful whole, and consisting of one or several rhythmic groups. A sentence may be divided into syntagms in various ways, depending on shades of meaning, logical emphasis, or syntactic homonymy. An example is vchera/bylo zharko as contrasted to vchera bylo/zharko (“yesterday/it was hot”—”yesterday it was/hot”).

We clearly perceive that two of these pairs of syntagms have a slight variation in number (interaction-interactions, indexes-index), but this is not semantically embedded and it generates no conceptual change.
The narrative of awakening after one's death can only properly belong to an impossible subject, one who can say not only the syntagm "my death," but also the necessarily improper proposition, "I died." (42) This is the hypothetical voice of someone who has lived for one decisive moment, someone whose life has been encapsulated by such a moment, someone who has experienced death.

The acme of the kiluba conceptual construction is thus found in the syntagm; mulemantu which has a plural: balemantu, referring to a person who respects himself/herself, thus in turn making himself or herself respected, because he or she is a wise or virtuous person, fault free, wise, prudent, pleasant, welcoming, respected, and venerated.
The allusion is to the canonical nineteenth-century Hungarian translation of Hamlet by poet Janos Arany, where in act 1 Hamlet meets his fathers ghost: Arany renders the sepulchre's "ponderous and marble jaws," with a shocking poetic license, as "ponderous marble gums." A marble sarcophagus agape like deaths toothless gums is certainly an image to "make night hideous"; the syntagm has become an emblem of Arany's idiosyncratic transubstantiation of Shakespeare's imagery.
Of course, one does not have to traverse a text solely along a progressive, rectilinear syntagm. Textual materiality allows for reversibility (rereading), discontinuity (reading out of order, skipping ahead), and circularity (considered as a range extending from the minimal: rereading particular words or passages, to the maximal: starting over at a work's conclusion).
The logic of group polarization, in this context, is a syntagm used by Sunstein to describe a series of possible explanations for the polarizing effects of deliberation in groups constituted by individuals who share with varying intensity--moderate or extreme--opinions favorable to one side in a wider moral, political or social debate.
Eco-Bio-Economic-Safety directed to the economic, biodiversity, food security and food safety aspects, introduces--the new syntagm of the Eco-Bio-Economic Food Safety, to define also to a new syntagm--the Eco-Bio-Economic Social Safety, focusing the Customer Satisfaction and equally the Customer Protection, considering that food safety and social security have among other important objectives, a common target--customer satisfaction and its protection- and in extension, all interested parties.
It has been effectively replaced, by means of rhetoric measures, with a large collection of its discursive substitutes, thus turning the toponym "Eastern and Central non-Germanic Europe" and its synonyms into that which can be termed "empty syntagm," a ready-made structure for achieving whatever goals are defined and pronounced outside East Central Europe.
It has been further observed that these two basic dimensions of language (lexical/semantic and grammatical) are related to two basic linguistic operations: selecting (that means the language as a paradigm) ("paradigm" in linguistics is usually understood as a set of linguistic items that form mutually exclusive choices in particular syntactic roles) and sequencing (that means language as syntagm) [59-61].
According to this biaxial scheme, the vertical is the axis of order, paradigm, symbolic function, disutility, unimpeded sightlines and disembodied omniscience, whereas to the horizontal belong disorder, syntagm, enunciative function, utility, partial sight lines and exposure to visibility.
