PV causes Benign
Tertian Malaria with fever paroxysms every third day and has a benign course.9 However, isolated cases of Vivax Malaria with delirium, seizures, renal failure, shock, hepatic dysfunction, severe anaemia, pulmonary oedema and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) have been reported.10-15
Plasmodium Falciparum causes malignant
tertian malaria and can lead to complicated ma- laria like cerebral malaria and multi organ involve- ment.
This difference in biological therapy--"White people respond best to
tertian malaria (plasmodium vivax); negroes to quartan (plasmodium malariae)"--was acknowledged in the Journal of the National Medical Association and both the syphilology and malariology literature.
It should be noted that "
tertian malaria" refers to falciparum malaria while "clinical malaria" refers to other types of malaria, notably vivax.
vivax has been considered a benign entity and hence the term 'benign
tertian malaria' has been used to describe it.
Objective: To describe the frequency of thrombocytopenia among young soldiers admitted with benign
tertian malaria at CMH Pano Aqil.
