theta pinch

[′thād·ə ‚pinch]
(plasma physics)
A device for producing a controlled nuclear fusion reaction, in which plasma in a long torus or skinny tube is confined by a magnetic field produced by current-carrying coils, and is shock-heated and compressed by pulses in this field to produce the high temperatures at which fusion reactions take place; the magnetic field is then sustained in order to maintain the plasma confinement.

Plasma rotation in magnetic fields was another topic that he worked on throughout his life, first on rotation in theta pinches and later in tokamaks.
In my 36 years of work at AEC-ERDA- DOE, I had the privilege to work in almost all magnetic confinement programs starting with theta pinches, Z-pinches, mirrors, tokamaks, and several alternate concepts at almost all fusion laboratories including PPPL, ORNL, LANL, LLNL, SNLA, and General Atomics.
In February 1964, he joined the Max-Planck-Institute for Physics and Astrophysics in Munich, where he studied theta pinches in toroidal geometry.
