thumb drive

A popular name for a USB drive. The term is widely used because "thumb" clearly identifies its size in contrast to multi-terabyte USB drives that are small modules. The name was coined by Trek 2000 International and launched at CeBIT in 2000. See USB drive, USB drive names and USB.
