Kniphofia

(also Tritoma), a genus of perennial radiciform herbaceous plants of the family Liliaceae. The leaves are radical, long, and narrow. The scape is straight, with an elongated spicate or racemous inflorescence. The perianth is gamophyllous and sometimes fleshy, with a long cylindrical or bell-shaped tube and a short fold. The fruit is a capsule. There are more than 70 species, distributed in the subtropical and tropical regions of southern Africa and East Africa and on the island of Madagascar. Many species are ornamentals and are grown in greenhouses or outdoors. They are not resistant to cold. The most successfully grown species is Kniphofia uvaria, or Tritoma uvaria. The flowers of this tall species are coral-red during blossoming; they gradually turn orange and, finally, yellowish green. Hybrid forms and varieties of Kniphofia are usually cultivated.
