Typical line-of-sight distances for VHF reception.
The range of radio frequencies between 30 and 300 MHz. Portions of this band, 108 to 118 MHz, are used for certain NAVAIDs (navigational aids); 118 to 136 MHz are used for civil air-to-ground voice communications. Other frequencies in this band are used for purposes not related to air traffic control. Very high frequencies are line-of-sight frequencies with practically no ground-wave element. The VHF range increases with height. The maximum ranges for voice communication are about 185 miles (300 km). Communication systems operating VHF bands provide high-quality communications between aircraft and ground stations. In spite of being line-of-sight communication, long-range
communications using VHF are possible through repeater stations and satellite links.
