NetCache

NetCache

A family of Web cache servers from Network Appliance that come in a wide range of sizes for use in branch offices to large service providers. NetCache devices support video-on-demand and broadcast streaming and use Network Appliance's innovative Data ONTAP microkernel OS and Write Anywhere File Layout file system (WAFL). NetCache supports "split streaming," which, like multicasting, provides a one-to-many transmission enabling one video stream from the Internet to be sent to multiple users at the same time.

NetCache Appliance
This is an "appliance" because it plugs into the network and performs one function: Web caching. This C6100 model holds up to two terabytes of Web pages. (Image courtesy of Network Appliance, Inc.)
