Norton, Andrew
(1786–1853) Biblical scholar, Unitarian theologian; born in Hingham, Mass. He graduated from Harvard in 1804, held a pastorate in Maine for a time, and returned to Harvard as a tutor in 1813. He was professor of divinity at Harvard (1819–30), and afterward an independent scholar. His Evidences of the Genuineness of the Gospels (3 vols. 1837–44) was one of the earliest critical studies of the Bible published in America.
