Project CHIP

Project CHIP

(Project Connected Home over IP) An expected specification by the end of 2020 that unifies current and future smart home products using the IP protocol. Announced in late 2019, Project CHIP is a coalition of major hardware and software companies, including Google, Amazon, Apple, Samsung and the ZigBee Alliance.

Today, smart home products use multiple protocols such as X10, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ZigBee and Z-Wave with little interoperability between them. In the first CHIP specification, Wi-Fi, Thread and Bluetooth LE (Low Energy) are the wireless protocols. See Wi-Fi, Bluetooth LE and Thread.
