release
1. Law the surrender of a claim, right, title, etc., in favour of someone else
2. a control mechanism for starting or stopping an engine
3. 
a. the opening of the exhaust valve of a steam engine near the end of the piston stroke
b. the moment at which this valve opens
4. the electronic control regulating how long a note sounds after a synthesizer key has been released
5. the control mechanism for the shutter in a camera
(programming)release - (Or "released version", "baseline") A version of a piece of software which has been made public (as opposed to a version that is in development, or otherwise unreleased).

A release is either a major release, a revision, or a bugfix.

Pre-release versions may be called alpha test, or beta test versions.
