Apothegm
a generalized, polished, and pithy saying attributed to a specific author. Examples are “Harmony creates friendship” (Democritus), “Education develops talents but does not create them” (Voltaire), and “A lie offends the listener and debases him in the speaker’s eyes” (Chekhov).
