adaptive sync

The dynamic adjusting of a monitor's vertical refresh rate to the frame rate of the graphics card (display adapter). Adaptive sync eliminates tearing, stuttering and judder (see vertical sync).

NVIDIA's G-Sync and DisplayPort 1.2a Adaptive Sync are examples, and the technologies must be in both the card and monitor. Adaptive sync emerged in the 2013-2014 time frame.
