albitophyre [al′bid·ə‚fīr]
(petrology) A porphyritic rock that contains albite phenocrysts in a groundmass composed mostly of albite. Albitophyre (also keratophyre), a magmatic rock of porphyritic structure. Porphyritic formations and the tiniest crystals or microlites of the predominant rock mass appear as albite. Albitophyres are formed in the metamorphosis of a lava stream of trachyte and andesite. They are commonly found among ancient effusive formations of the Urals, Kazakhstan, and the Caucasus. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
