Alert (əlûrt`), settlement, on Ellesmere Island, extreme N Nunavut Territory, Canada, on the Arctic Ocean. It is the most northerly permanent settlement in the world. The settlement has a radio and meteorological station and a landing strip operated jointly by Canada and the United States.

(1) A sound or message that indicates some predefined event has occurred or a selected operation is about to be performed. The terms "alert" and "alarm" are sometimes used synonymously; however, an alert is more of a warning in advance, whereas an alarm signals that the event or error has occurred. See alarm.

(2) A document with urgent information about a threat or vulnerability such as CIAC Bulletins at http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHome.html.

A state of readiness against impending danger or for going into action.

(operating system)alert - /*'l*rt/ An audible and/or visual message intended to inform a system's users or administrators about a change in the operating conditions of that system or about some kind of error condition. In a graphical user interface, an alert would typically be displayed as a small window containing the message and a button to click to dismiss the window.
